Cédric Gugler with Sensational Top-5 in Crans-Montana

News

09. September 2024

Cédric Gugler achieved a remarkable fourth-place finish at the prestigious Omega European Masters in Crans-Montana.

Gugler’s achievement was nothing short of sensational. Heading into the final round of the tournament with the leaders still within reach, he maintained his poise and delivered a brilliant round of 67 (-3) on Sunday, ensuring a tie for fourth place, finishing at eight-under-par for the tournament.

Gugler’s finish in the Top 5 places him in prestigious company, becoming only the third Swiss golfer to achieve such a feat in the history of the tournament. His compatriots Julien Clément (3rd in 2008) and Paolo Quirici (4th in 1989, 5th in 1991) were the only others to break into the top tier in Crans-Montana.

"I haven't fully grasped what I’ve achieved yet," Gugler admitted after his round. "But it feels absolutely incredible! The support I received throughout the week, especially on Sunday, gave me an amazing boost. I want to thank everyone who came out to cheer for me."

A Rising Star

Cédric Gugler's rise has been nothing short of meteoric this season. After winning three tournaments on the Pro Golf Tour, he earned a direct promotion to the Challenge Tour, and now, he’s preparing for his second consecutive event on the DP World Tour. His performance in Crans-Montana shows that he can hold his own under pressure, even against the best in the world.

"I can see now that I’m capable of competing with top players, and I’m learning to handle the pressure," Gugler said. "Today, I stayed in the moment, focused on my breathing exercises, and enjoyed every second. All of this has given me an incredible amount of confidence. I know I’m on the right track."

Great Week for Swiss Golf

Gugler wasn’t the only Swiss golfer to make waves at the Omega European Masters. Three other Swiss players made the cut and added to what was a fantastic week for Swiss golf. Zurich's Ronan Kleu (T47, +1) and Nicola Gerhardsen (T59, +3), along with Valais native Max Schliesing (T67, +4), all delivered their best-ever results on the European tour.

Nicola Gerhardsen, playing in his final tournament before turning professional, won the award for the best amateur of the week. "This is the first time I’ve made the cut here after five attempts," said Gerhardsen. "It was an amazing experience, and I enjoyed every moment of it. I want to thank my national coach and caddie, Richard Adby, as well as Swiss Golf for their support during my amateur career." Gerhardsen now heads to Austria to take part in the first stage of the DP World Tour’s Q School.

Meanwhile, the tournament victory went to England's Matt Wallace, who edged out Spain’s Alfredo Garcia-Heredia in a dramatic playoff to claim the title.

Looking Ahead

With momentum on his side and confidence running high, Cédric Gugler is now focused on the upcoming DP World Tour event in Northern Ireland. As he prepares to tee off alongside some of the biggest names in golf, Gugler’s stunning performance in Crans-Montana will surely fuel his ambition as he continues to make his mark on the international stage.
