Swiss PGA Member Joel Girrbach has achieved the biggest success of his professional career, finishing third at the Open de España 2025. The Thurgau native narrowly missed out on the playoff by a single stroke, earning €176,000 in prize money – his best result to date on the DP World Tour.
Girrbach demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the week at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, shooting all four rounds under par with scores of 69, 65, 67 and 69, for a total of -14.
Before the final round, he trailed the leader Marco Penge by four shots, but fought his way into contention with a solid front nine. Despite three dropped shots early on the back nine, Girrbach finished strongly with a closing birdie on the 18th hole to secure solo third place.
The result marks a major milestone in Girrbach’s career. With the significant points and prize money earned, he moves up from 109th to 60th in the Race to Dubai standings – comfortably securing his tour card for next season. The strong performance also keeps his chances alive for qualifying for the season-ending events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, reserved for the top 70 and 50 players respectively.
Swiss PGA congratulates Joel Girrbach on this outstanding achievement and wishes him continued success for the remainder of the season.
