The Swiss golfer shines at a rain-shortened tournament in Golf Saint Apollinaire
30. September 2024
Swiss golfer Luca Galliano achieved his best-ever result on the Challenge Tour, finishing in the top five of the 2024 Swiss Challenge. The tournament, held at Golf Saint Apollinaire from September 26-29, was reduced to 36 holes due to adverse weather conditions. Scotsman Euan Walker claimed victory with a superb final round.
The Swiss Challenge tested the patience of the 131 players, including 16 Swiss participants, as rain halted play for five hours on Thursday and washed out all action on Saturday. Sunday morning brought fog delays before play resumed.
Under these challenging conditions, 29-year-old Euan Walker dominated with rounds of 69 and 66 to finish nine under par. Galliano, playing on a wildcard invitation from the Alps Tour, shone in his second round with a score of 68, climbing 22 places to secure a shared fifth-place finish at four under par. This marked a career-best finish for the 38-year-old Swiss golfer on the Challenge Tour.
Mauro Gilardi, another Swiss player from Graubünden, also earned prize money with a tied 41st finish.
In a week defined by weather interruptions, Walker’s bogey-free final round, featuring six birdies, gave him a commanding three-stroke victory. He finished ahead of Norway's Kristoffer Reitan and England's Bradley Bawden, both tied for second at six under par.
This win propelled Walker into 21st place on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, keeping his hopes of promotion alive. Meanwhile, Galliano’s remarkable top-five finish signals a promising highlight in his golf career.
The Road to Mallorca heads next to the Czech Republic for the D+D Real Czech Challenge at Royal Beroun Golf Club from October 2-5, 2024.
