Morgane Metraux is in the lead at the Olympic Games!
08. August 2024
Swiss PGA member, Morgane Metraux, showcased an outstanding performance on the second day of the Olympic Games in Paris. She played an extraordinary front nine of 8 under par, featuring 2 eagles and 4 birdies. Despite a challenging back nine of 2 over par, her impressive round of 66 has placed her in the solo first place with a total of 136 strokes. Morgane is now 1 stroke ahead of Ruoning Yin and 3 strokes ahead of Lydia Ko.
During an interview, Morgane shared her thoughts on her performance:
"Having 2 eagles in 9 holes is something that has never happened to me before. It's called being 'in the zone,' right? Exactly. I had a feeling that everything was going well, and basically, nothing could go wrong. I tried to stay as focused as possible on each shot, not worrying about the score, and just continued to play aggressively when I could and a bit more conservatively when necessary. We stuck to our game plan from the practice rounds, and I executed well today."
Reflecting on her mindset, Morgane added: "It's hard to explain. There are so many times when I'm not playing well and I try to get into that mindset, but it's difficult. Sometimes a few putts fall, and suddenly you feel it. I wasn't necessarily thinking about making the putts; I just tried to roll them on the line I wanted, and if they fell, great. If not, I knew I had made a good putt. It's a feeling of calm and serenity."
When the going became tougher, Morgane stayed in her routine: "Continuing with the routine, always doing the same thing, is very important to me. Just because something doesn't work out once doesn't mean you should change everything. Everything was working well on the front nine, so I just continued doing the same thing. In golf, there will always be a few shots over 18 holes that don't go as planned. You have to accept that and keep doing the same thing."
Meanwhile, Albane Valenzuela is holding strong at the shared 26th place after 36 holes. She played a steady front nine in even par, followed by a back nine in 2 over par with three bogeys and one birdie, ending the day 2 over par. Her total score stands at 146 strokes.
Tomorrow continues with the 3rd round. We wish our athletes the best of luck! Keep going, Team Switzerland!
